- Stockbridge was settled in 1829 when the Concord Methodist Church was organized. Since its settlement, there have been two competing views of who Stockbridge was named after. One view is that it was named after traveling professor, Levi Stockbridge. He passed throught the city many times and was well known and respected in his namesake community. The other view is that Stockbridge was named after Thomas Stocks. He was the State Surveyor and president of the Georgia State Senate in the 1820s. Ultimately, Stockbridge was incorporated as a town in 1895 and later as a city on August 6, 1920.
